Council Highlights for September 21, 2017

Franchise Fee Increase
Council passed a resolution to maintain the Fortis Alberta Franchise Fee at 8% for 2018..

Flagstaff Waste Management
Council approved an MOU with Flagstaff Waste Management to decommission the Sedgewick Transfer Site..

Solid Waste Bylaw
Council gave Second and Third and final reading to Bylaw #533/17, the Solid Waste Bylaw.
The Bylaw speaks to the following issues:

  • Requirement for all garbage to be placed within a hardcover receptacle.
  • Proper placement and location of receptacles put out for collection.
  • Times and duration that the receptacles can be placed out for pickup
  • Upkeep/vandalism of receptacles
  • Disturbance of residential waste that has been put out for collection
  • Items that cannot be placed out for collection
  • Provisions of yard waste collection
  • Enforcement of the Bylaw

The Bylaw states that the CAO or Bylaw Officer, at their discretion, may issue a letter or notice to anyone in contravention of the Bylaw with timeframe to complete any action required.  Non-compliance would result in a fine of $100 for the first offence and $200 for subsequent offences.

RFC Phase II Funding
Council approved the recommendations of the Recreation Funding Committee to allocate Phase II grant funding as follows:

Sedgewick Minor Ball received $13,526
Battle River Minor Hockey received  $2500
CHSPS received $2500
Sedgewick Lake Park received $5000
Recreation Centre received $27,500


August 24th, 2017 Council Meeting Highlights

AMSC Rebate Contest
Council approved putting a rebate of $262 from AMSC towards the purchase of a community BBQ to directly benefit the community.  The Town will be entered into the AUMA Rebate Contest with the winners receiving a free AUMA convention registration worth $700.

Recreation Board Bylaw
Council gave first, second, and third reading for Bylaw 532/17, the Town of Sedgewick Recreation Board Bylaw.  The Bylaw formally establishes membership, powers, duties and limitations of the Recreation Board.

FRSWMA Membership Agreement
Council approved a membership agreement between the Town of Sedgewick and the Flagstaff Regional Solid Waste Management Association.

Solid Waste Bylaw
Council gave first reading to Bylaw 533/17, the Solid Waste Bylaw.  The Bylaw sets standards for the following:

  • Requirement of all solid waste to be placed in receptacles with properly fitted covers.
  • Proper placement of receptacles put out for collection.
  • Upkeep of receptacles.
  • Parameters of yard waste collection.
  • Enforcement of the Bylaw and associated penalties.

Development Permit Application
Council cancelled Development Permit 2017-05 and approved Permit 2017-07 allowing for a variance on the height of a maintenance shop expansion and office building to 11.5 meters.


Nomination Day concludes with Incumbent Councillors Retaining Office

Nomination forms were accepted at Town office between 9am and 12pm on September 18th. Nomination papers were filed by the following individuals:

Perry Robinson - Mayor

Stephen Levy - Councillor

Greg Sparrow - Councillor

Timmie Schmutz - Councillor

Grant Imlah - Councillor

As the number of nominations received by the returning officer for each office is equal to the number of persons required to be elected, the returning officer has declared the persons nominated to be elected to the offices that they filed nomination papers for.



Town Welcomes new CAO

A new Chief Administrative Officer began with the Town of Sedgewick on July 17th.

Town Council held a special meeting on July 6th in order to approve the hiring of Jim Fedyk whose name some local residents may recognize. Fedyk was employed by Flagstaff County as the Community Recreation Liaison from 2011 to 2014 where he administered the Regional Recreation Grant Program.

Most recently Fedyk has held the position of Recreation Manager for the City of Cold Lake where he managed a number of facilities, an $8 million budget and up to 90 full-time, temporary and casual staff. Fedyk has recently completed his National Advanced Certificate in Local Authority Administration Level II.

The Town of Sedgewick population of 857 is located in East Central Alberta, along Highway 13 and Secondary Highway 869.  Sedgewick is primarily a farming community, with mixed crops and the oil industry is very active in the area.

  • Youth Centre - Nights Alive Centre is open for teens 14 - 17 years old.
  • Seniors are very active with cards and floor curling

  • Community Hall that hosts various evenings of Entertainment (capacity of 250).
